Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Gender Equality and the US Supreme Court

Ruth Bader Ginsberg was once asked “When will there be enough women on the US supreme court?” She responded “When there are nine.” That question – when will there be enough – was never asked in the 192 years where the US supreme court consisted of all men.

Even comedians are asking the question what would the world look like if women ran it. wondering what the world might look like if women ran the world, check out this comedy skit by Von Baroness…

I’m not suggesting that women should or should not run the world. But we hold up half the sky, and are not equally represented for doing so, in any way, shape or form…

And what would our governments and organizations look like if women were equal to men?

We could see a possible $12 trillion dollars added to the global economy by 2025, according to McKinsey.

Let’s be clear though. It’s not just about women being represented on the Supreme Court or in leadership positions in corporations. It’s more than a number or a quota.

When women are on BoDs and Senior level positions, when there is increased gender diversity – organizations tend to perform better. There is increased employee retention and satisfaction, better decision-making and greater innovation.

When women are represented in governments, we tend to invest in public policies that benefit the greater good.

And financially, throughout the world, we are more likely to save money and make wiser investments.

Every aspect of society benefits when women play a significant role.

But, for us to have more of this, we need to raise girls who speak up, stand up and rise up. Girls who believe, in their bones, that they are capable of heroic deeds.
